STUDY WITH US

Mathematics has been a human fascination since ancient time. At our School, students are well equipped with modern computer systems and a team of experts to help unlock their curiosities and realise their potentials. Many of our graduates have landed successful careers, whether they specialised in mathematics or statistics or both. We collaborate and engage with the research community internationally. ABOUT US

Professor Jan De Gier
Professor Jan De Gier, Head of School

The University of Melbourne's School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of Australia's leading mathematics and statistics schools. It has achieved this status through the high quality of its research and teaching programs. The School offers a wide range of subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students and is involved in aspects of community life that impact on the interests of the School and the discipline.

We are a broad School covering areas of pure and applied mathematics, and statistics. We have research foci in Algebra, Continuum Modelling, Discrete Mathematics, Geometry and Topology, Operations Research, Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Physics, Stochastic Processes and Statistics and are partners in the Faculty of Science's "Centre for System Genomics".

We offer an undergraduate program primarily but not exclusively as a major through the Bachelor of Science and concurrent Diploma in Mathematical Sciences, a research training and coursework Master of Science degree providing training unique in Australia at the graduate level, and PhD training. The School runs a Mathematics and Statistics Learning Centre that looks after the large number of undergraduate students taught by the School.

The School has a growing number of academic staff including postdoctoral research fellows. Several member of staff are Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science and/or been awarded prestigious Fellowships and Awards. The School hosts two ARC Centres of Excellence, and have several ARC Laureate, Future and DECRA Fellows.

We are home to the Statistical Consulting Centre that engages with industry to provide high quality statistical consulting. We have a strong external and international focus and have started the first international research institute/research station in Australia in 2015, MATRIX@Melbourne. MATRIX will run research-intensive, residential programs addressing key mathematical challenges in an environment where internationally renowned scientists can collaborate and engage with the Australian mathematical and statistical research community for a significant length of time.
